Aston Villa 1982: The Night England Conquered Europe

Rotterdam, 1982. Villa's finest hour under the European lights.
On the night of May 26, 1982, in the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, Aston Villa achieved something that had seemed impossible just a few years earlier. The club from Birmingham, in only their second season in the First Division after promotion, stood on top of Europe as champions.
🛡️ Peter Withe's Immortal Moment
The 67th minute. A cross from Tony Morley. Peter Withe, unmarked at the far post, bundled the ball over the line. It wasn't pretty — but it was perfect. That scruffy goal was enough to beat Bayern Munich, one of the greatest clubs in European history, and send Villa fans into delirium.
🏆 Against All Odds
Villa had lost their manager Ron Saunders mid-season, replacing him with Tony Barton. They played much of the tournament with a makeshift goalkeeper after Jimmy Rimmer went off injured after just nine minutes of the final. Nigel Spink, with only one previous first-team appearance, stepped in and was magnificent.
"We are the champions of Europe. Aston Villa."
