STORY:
For the World Cup on home soil, Germany – despite a good showing at the 2005 Confederations Cup – looked nothing like a serious contender. To the dismay of German fans who especially lamented the extravagant methods of Klinsmann and the fact that he was not living in Germany full time. Add to that a horrendous showing in a friendly against Italy (1-4) and expectations were quite low. However, luck was on the German’s side with a super soft draw in the first round and the team had no trouble securing first place and to overcome a Sweden team past its prime in the next round. By that time, the entire country was already behind their team thanks to the very attractive positive soccer. That and a very cautious approach by the opponents helped Germany to edge out the best Argentina team of recent memory. However, by the time Germany met Italy they were shown their boundaries as Italy accepted the battle and uncharacteristically attacked themselves. However, Germany left the World Cup with heads held high as Portugal was defeated in the third place playoff. Germany had regained some credibility again! And despite Klinsmann’s wish to play as many games as possible in red, FIFA had Germany play all their games in the classic white shirt with black pants. Classic? Well, not quite:
For 2006, one of Adidas’s designs was the boomerang or sliver design which was used for Germany’s home jersey which was predominantly white with black accents on top, namely the three stripes and thin sleeve trims. Note how the stripes on the left sleeve do not extend all the way to the end since a logo resembling the offical World Cup ball was displayed there. In this case, it was held in black, red and gold. The front was marked by a “shaping” pattern made out of boomerangs/slivers: from the collar there was one in black, on the sides in the middle a red one and towards the bottom (the largest) in yellow. The collar was a Mandarin style collar with a very wide opening on the front – one of the oddes ones ever. On the front, the Adidas logo was centered with the black front number on the right and a similar black Eagle logo to 2004 on the left. However, the three stars were yellow this time around.
